Energy and Agriculture Ministries Agree to Accelerate Cooperation to Boost Sudan’s Agriculture

The Ministers of Energy and Agriculture discussed prospects for cooperation between the two ministries to advance agriculture in Sudan and overcome obstacles related to electric power and joint projects involving hydropower and irrigation.
Minister of Energy, Engineer and Advisor Al-Mutasim Ibrahim Ahmed, met with Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Qureshi Abdullah.
The meeting addressed several projects requiring joint efforts to achieve full agricultural productivity, foremost among them increasing the operational capacity of the Mina Power Station in Sennar State, which supplies electricity to the Rahad Agricultural Project, in order to ensure the success of both the winter and summer seasons, in addition to other urgent joint projects.
The Minister of Energy emphasized that his ministry is a key partner to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation due to the shared responsibilities between the two—particularly in hydropower and irrigation—affirming the ministry’s continued prioritization of the agricultural sector because of its direct link to food security.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation praised the efforts of the Ministry of Energy in the country’s reconstruction process, noting that it bears the responsibility of providing electricity and fuel services to all areas in Sudan that were destroyed by the militia. He also pointed out that the Mina Power Station requires 6 megawatt-hours to operate at full capacity.
