Araqchi mourns the agreement with the IAEA: “It’s over”

Following Iran’s criticism of the decision issued by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi declared the agreement signed in Cairo on September 10 between him and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi as effectively over.

In a post on X, he stated that the Cairo agreement has ended due to the positions of the United States and European countries. He wrote: “Since the Troika countries (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) and the United States are seeking escalation, they know very well that the official end of the Cairo agreement is a direct result of their provocations.”

He also accused the U.S. and European sides of responding to Tehran’s goodwill with escalation, adding: “We are not seeking to create a new crisis, but the other parties do not appreciate our good intentions.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry had previously considered the IAEA Board of Governors’ decision regarding Iran’s nuclear program—which was supported by the U.S., Germany, France, and the U.K.—as unlawful and unjustified.

It also stated that “the actions of the three European countries and the U.S. in drafting and imposing this decision on the Board of Governors are clear evidence of their irresponsible approach and insistence on using the Agency as a tool to pressure Tehran.”
