The site Africa Intelligence reported that Khalifa Haftar has begun restructuring his militias and security apparatus in southern Libya, as the strategic importance of the Fezzan region grows in the Sudanese conflict, serving as a key logistics route across borders.
The report states that Haftar tasked his son, Khaled Haftar, with overseeing the reorganization of southern forces, highlighting the importance of the Subl al-Salam battalion—the most influential faction in the area—responsible for securing Kufra Airport, a key logistics hub through which supplies reach the Rapid Support Forces militia.
Additional forces, including the 106th and 166th Battalions led by Ayoub Al-Farjani, “Haftar’s relative,” alongside the 87th Battalion trained in Belarus, have reduced Subl al-Salam’s monopoly on military tasks in the area.
The report noted that the alliance with Subl al-Salam remains strategically important as it ensures control over the Sotra Triangle, a crucial node in southern influence. Previously, the RSF had captured the triangle in June, making it a transit point for supplies from Kufra to Hemeti’s militia. Recent strikes south of the triangle have shifted supply lines toward the Chadian border, which is considered less vulnerable.
