The African Union (AU) on Sunday strongly condemned the “horrific attacks” reported in Kalogi, South Kordofan, calling on all parties to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to stop the bloodshed.
According to local officials, an RSF attack on the area left 114 people dead and 71 injured, as stated by Kalogi locality executive director Issam al-Din al-Nanno on Saturday.
AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said in a statement that the attacks killed more than 100 civilians, including dozens of women and children, some of them in a kindergarten.
He emphasized that the deliberate targeting of children, teachers, medical personnel, and civilians trying to assist the wounded constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.
Mahamat expressed shock over the continued and escalating atrocities committed against civilians in the region and voiced deep concern over reports of ongoing airstrikes, drone attacks, and assaults on vital civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.
He urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities, ensure full protection for civilians—especially children, women, and the elderly—in accordance with international law, and allow unimpeded humanitarian access to affected communities.
He also called for independent investigations to ensure accountability for all violations and bring perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.
The AU reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional and international partners to prevent further atrocities and support the return to dialogue, peace, and stability.
