Calls for Decisive International Measures to Protect Civilians in Sudan

Sudan has urged the international community to take concrete, legal, and decisive measures to protect civilians in the country.

The call came during a high-level meeting addressed by Ambassador Faisal Abdelazim Salem, representative of Sudan’s Permanent Mission in New York, marking the tenth anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration for Victims of Genocide.

Salem highlighted the heinous crimes committed by the “rebel Rapid Support Forces militia” against unarmed civilians in Darfur, saying these crimes amount to genocide.

He urged that the measures include immediate action to halt military support to the RSF through regional and international channels, imposing sanctions on those funding or inciting atrocities, and strengthening international coordination to prevent weapons from reaching armed groups and militias.

Sudan’s statement referenced the national plan for civilian protection submitted to the UN Security Council and reaffirmed the government’s readiness to engage constructively with international partners to implement it in line with national sovereignty and the UN Charter.

The statement emphasized that the people of Darfur “do not seek sympathy alone—they demand justice,” urging the world to act before more lives are lost.
