The UN World Food Programme announced it will begin reducing food rations for Sudanese communities facing famine due to funding shortages.
Ross Smith, Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response at WFP, told reporters in a video briefing that starting in January the program would “be forced to cut food rations by 70% for communities facing famine and by 50% for those at risk of sliding into it.”
Smith warned of severe consequences for the program’s operations due to the deteriorating funding situation.
He added that the financial crisis is likely to worsen in the coming months, noting: “By April, we will be facing a complete funding collapse,” threatening WFP’s ability to meet the essential food needs of millions in Sudan.
The agency stressed that the cuts come amid rapidly worsening humanitarian conditions, with hunger spreading and more people becoming entirely dependent on food aid for survival.
