Gezira Scheme: 110,000 Feddans Planted with Wheat

The Gezira Scheme has completed the cultivation of 110,000 feddans of wheat out of a targeted total of 300,000 feddans for the current season, including 10,000–15,000 feddans allocated for seed production to bridge the gap in certified seed supplies.

The Governor of the Gezira Scheme, Ibrahim Mustafa, affirmed the administration’s commitment to completing the planting of all targeted areas by the end of December and ensuring the regularity of all agricultural operations. He pointed to several challenges that hindered the winter cropping season, notably financing constraints and the high cost of production inputs. He outlined the administration’s plan for the next phase, which aims to overcome financing and input obstacles by expanding seed-production areas and importing agricultural inputs directly from their sources.

Mustafa expressed his appreciation for the continued support of international organizations in revitalizing the project’s production process.

He also reassured farmers that substantial efforts are underway to resolve irrigation bottlenecks and clear canals of weeds, announcing the completion of cleaning works on 150 canals out of 700 currently targeted, following the deployment of 95 dredgers operating in irrigation channels, in addition to the provision of 50,000 gallons of fuel to run the dredgers.
