Hossam Hassan, Egypt Coach: Africa Cup of Nations Is Not Easy

Hossam Hassan, head coach of Egypt’s senior national football team, stressed the importance of Friday’s match against South Africa in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing that all matches are approached with the same level of focus and respect.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Hassan said: “All matches are important. We respect every team. South Africa are a strong side, but we play to achieve positive results. Our goal is to win and collect the three points.”
He added: “We take each match on its own and carefully study the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. Every game requires a different approach depending on the circumstances on the pitch.”
Hassan expressed his gratitude to Egyptian and Moroccan fans for their support during Egypt’s match against Zimbabwe, noting that the technical staff and players feel comfortable in Morocco, which he described as a sister country.
He confirmed that all squad members are fit, particularly the goalkeepers, saying: “The entire team is in good condition, especially the goalkeepers, and I have full confidence in all of them.”
The Egypt coach also said he was pleased with the strong backing from the Egyptian public throughout the tournament.
Hassan explained that his role as head coach is to address any mistakes that occur during matches, stressing his complete confidence in every player in the squad.
He revealed that the fitness status of Mustafa Mohamed and Mohamed Hamdy will be decided during Thursday’s training session.
On the strength of the competition, Hassan said: “The tournament features strong national teams, which is only natural. It is not easy at all, but we are ready.”
He added: “South Africa’s style of play is similar to that of club teams. We have faced South African clubs many times through Al Ahly, Zamalek and Pyramids, so we know them well.”
Referring to history, Hassan said: “We defeated South Africa in the 1998 edition, and God willing, we will repeat that.”
He also defended his decision to substitute Emam Ashour in the previous match, explaining that it was purely a tactical decision related to the style of play and the need for a traditional striker.
Hassan concluded by underlining Egypt’s readiness to face any opponent in the tournament, stating: “We fear no one.”
