China Waives USD 45 Million of Sudan’s Debt

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah

China has announced the cancellation of 345 million Chinese yuan—equivalent to approximately USD 45 million—in interest-free loans previously extended to Sudan to finance various development projects.

The announcement came during a meeting on Wednesday in Port Sudan between the Chinese Chargé d’Affaires to Sudan, Shu Jian, and the Undersecretary of Planning at Sudan’s Ministry of Finance, Mohamed Bashar. The meeting discussed a draft memorandum of understanding concerning Sudan’s debt to China, under which the debt will be written off.

The meeting also reviewed the status of implementation of a previously approved Chinese grant worth 200 million yuan, allocated to support infrastructure projects in three vital sectors: water, agriculture, and electricity.

For his part, the Chinese Chargé d’Affaires affirmed the Chinese government’s readiness to provide an additional grant through United Nations agencies to support the implementation of solar energy projects for drinking water stations in the targeted states of Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar, and Blue Nile.

Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Planning praised China’s role in development projects and its significant contribution to supporting Sudan’s national economy and infrastructure development, particularly in the energy, water, and agriculture sectors, stressing the importance of continued bilateral cooperation to achieve sustainable development in the country.
