Foreign Policy: Sudan Is Living an Unspeakable Human Tragedy

The US magazine Foreign Policy has classified Sudan’s crisis as the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe this year, warning against ignoring crimes committed in the country and entrenching a culture of impunity amid a conflict now entering its third year.

In its annual report, the magazine said Sudan is experiencing an indescribable human tragedy, with the war causing massive loss of life and widespread displacement, leaving large segments of the population facing acute hunger.

The report highlighted field atrocities so severe that mass graves and extensive destruction are clearly visible in satellite imagery.

Foreign Policy drew attention to international accusations against the Rapid Support Forces of committing acts of genocide, particularly following the fall of El Fasher in Darfur and the subsequent systematic targeting of civilians.

The magazine criticized what it described as “international indifference” toward Sudan compared to other global crises, noting that the conflict continues to be labeled a “forgotten war.”

Politically, the report observed a shift among civilian forces and pro-democracy activists, who have shown growing support for the Sudanese army, viewing such engagement as a necessary step to confront threats to state sovereignty and survival.

The analysis stressed the need for genuine pressure on regional actors supporting the conflict, and for cutting off supply lines that fuel the war machine.

The report concluded by calling for the activation of criminal documentation tools using modern technologies and open-source intelligence, emphasizing that while halting violence is an urgent priority, documenting evidence to ensure accountability before international justice remains essential to preventing future atrocities and ending impunity in Africa.
