Government Official: Militia and Al-Hilu Movement Shelling Leaves 500 Dead in South Kordofan

The government of South Kordofan State has revealed that more than 500 people were killed in the state as a result of artillery shelling and drone strikes carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N, Al-Hilu faction) during 2024–2025.

Adam Salem, Director of Information in the state, told Al-Tara Sudan that most of the victims were children, women, and the elderly.

He noted that since the outbreak of the war, the militia’s strategy has focused on targeting cities in an effort to depopulate them of civilians.

Salem confirmed that the continued targeting of densely populated areas by the RSF and the SPLM-N through artillery and drone attacks represents a reaction to ongoing military operations across the Kordofan fronts, aimed at diverting attention from the army’s advances and boosting the morale of their fighters on the ground.

He further stated that the militia is engaged in widespread looting, theft, harassment, detention, extortion through ransom demands, and extrajudicial killings, citing the recent killing of the Secretary-General of the Zakat Chamber as an example.
