Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohi El-Din Salem, called on the African Union to lift the suspension of Sudan’s membership in the continental bloc, while warning that external interference is fueling the war in the country.
The foreign minister addressed a formal meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council on Thursday at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
Salem urged the Council to support Sudan’s initiative to end the war, which he said was imposed on the state following the rebellion of the Rapid Support Forces.
He also pointed to regional agendas and external interventions in the war, including alleged support to the militia with advanced weapons, drones, and the recruitment of mercenaries, which he said threatens regional peace and security.
Salem highlighted attacks on infrastructure and civilians as a dangerous escalation, citing the targeting of World Food Programme aid trucks and a civilian vehicle in Kordofan, and called on the Council to take a firm position against such violations.
The foreign minister affirmed the Sudanese government’s openness to all initiatives aimed at ending the war, including the May 2023 Jeddah Declaration.
