Armed Assailants Rob Humanitarian Workers in Darfur

Three corroborating sources in Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, revealed on Wednesday that a vehicle belonging to the humanitarian organization People to People was subjected to an armed robbery while returning from the Jebel Marra area to Zalingei.

A well-informed source — who requested anonymity for security reasons — told Darfur24 that unidentified gunmen intercepted the organization’s vehicle in the “Khor Ramla” area along the road linking Jebel Marra and Zalingei. The organization is active in service delivery, healthcare, and community support initiatives.

According to the source, the assailants stopped the vehicle and seized mobile phones belonging to two female staff members and the driver, in addition to cash carried by the team, before fleeing the scene.

In a related development, an employee of another humanitarian organization — who also asked not to be identified — stated that relief agencies operating in Central Darfur are repeatedly exposed to looting and isolated attacks. She pointed to the absence of effective security intervention to safeguard humanitarian workers.

She called on the relevant authorities to provide secure corridors for both national and international organizations to ensure their teams can reach operational areas without being subjected to such recurring incidents.
