Mohamed Zakaria, spokesperson for the Democratic Bloc, said a delegation representing the bloc held a meeting with representatives of the Quintet Mechanism at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo as part of ongoing consultations on ways to advance the political process in Sudan.
According to Zakaria, the mechanism raised a series of inquiries and questions regarding the design of the political process for resolving the crisis in Sudan, as well as the Democratic Bloc’s vision for its pathways and priorities.
He noted that the bloc explained its vision, which is based on launching a Sudanese–Sudanese political process founded on the principles of Sudan’s unity, respect for its sovereignty, and the legitimacy of its institutions.
The proposal is built on two parallel tracks: a political track, involving civilian actors to address governance and the transitional process, and a security track, involving the armed forces and based on the Jeddah Declaration ceasefire framework of May 2023, ultimately leading to the dismantling of the RSF militia.
The bloc also stressed the importance of an inclusive political process that involves all Sudanese political forces, excluding those implicated in war crimes, genocide, and ethnic cleansing.
Regarding the role of international partners, the bloc emphasized that international efforts should be limited to facilitating dialogue within the political track, in coordination with Egypt and other international actors, while preserving Sudanese ownership of the political process through a national committee to lead the dialogue.
The meeting was attended by Mohamed Ibn Chambas, head of the Quintet Mechanism; a representative of the African Union; Ambassador Zaid Al-Sabban, representing the League of Arab States; Adolfo Delridge, representing the European Union; Lawrence Korbandy, representing the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD); and Mohamed Goumhya, representing the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, in addition to several leaders of the Democratic Bloc.
