Sudan Launches Comprehensive Geological Survey

The Director General of the Public Authority for Geological Research, consulting geologist Ahmed Haroun Al-Toum, announced that arrangements have been completed for the launch of a comprehensive geological survey program following the Eid Al-Fitr holiday.

The first phase will begin in River Nile State and the Northern State, before expanding later to Red Sea State and Kassala State.

Al-Toum said the program aims to build an integrated database of geological, geochemical, and mineral information to support the government’s plans to develop the mining sector and attract investment. He noted that the survey will cover precious metals, energy minerals, rare elements, and industrial minerals.

He added that technical teams will begin fieldwork after the holiday with the participation of staff from the authority’s headquarters and state offices, as part of a plan extending through 2026 and 2027 to conduct a comprehensive scientific geological survey across several states in the country.

Al-Toum also revealed that a chemical analysis laboratory in River Nile State is set to open soon. The lab will initially receive geological survey samples from River Nile and Northern states before later serving other states under the national survey program.

He explained that the project forms part of the Ministry of Minerals’ plan to strengthen geological knowledge in Sudan, stressing that the Public Authority for Geological Research serves as the state’s technical and advisory body on mineral resources.
