Restoration of 90% of Archive Maps from the Gezira Scheme

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Qureshi, announced the recovery of 90% of the historical documents and maps related to the irrigation sector in Wad Medani during a field visit to review final preparations for the 2026 summer agricultural season.

During his inspection of the “New Map Office” and central workshops, the minister emphasized that previous attempts to sabotage the archives were primarily aimed at crippling the productive capacity of the agricultural infrastructure. He praised the dedication of national staff who worked tirelessly to restore this heritage, highlighting that the irrigation sector now sends a strong message of hope: Sudanese institutions are capable of recovery and progress.

The Undersecretary for the Irrigation Sector, Engineer Dou Al-Bait Abdulrahman, stated that 35,000 archived maps out of a total of 40,000 have been recovered. These documents represent a technical and engineering record of longstanding agricultural projects spanning more than 100 years.

The delegation concluded the visit by affirming the readiness of technical and engineering teams for the 2026 summer season. The minister reviewed the operations of the mechanical workshops and confirmed the ministry’s commitment to providing all necessary resources to ensure smooth irrigation in national projects.
