UN Cuts Aid to One Million Sudanese Refugees in Chad

Two United Nations agencies announced on Thursday that more than one million Sudanese refugees are facing drastic cuts to life-saving assistance such as food and water, unless donors fill a funding gap exceeding $400 million.

The World Food Programme and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees stated in a joint statement, reported by Reuters on Thursday, that they do not have sufficient funds to assist all refugees. They warned of further reductions in the coming months unless a funding shortfall of $428 million is addressed.

The World Food Programme’s Country Director, Sarah Gibson, said: “With less than half of the resources we need available, we are unable to provide enough food to those who need it most.” She added that this emergency situation will force refugees to resort to harmful coping strategies, putting lives at risk.
