Leila Aboulela\u2019s dazzling new novel, \u201cRiver Spirit,\u201d follows the course of that revolution as it turns into a new instrument of oppression.<br \/>\nIn this turbulent time live the novel\u2019s cast of characters. There\u2019s Yaseen, a merchant turned jurist whose principled stance against the Mahdi leads him to peril.<br \/>\n\u201cWe call him the Mutamahdi, the fake Mahdi, the impostor,\u201d Yaseen says. \u201cBrave words and yet our nerves are on edge, our confidence in tatters.\u201d Salha is Yaseen\u2019s wife and a formidable woman who makes a heartbreaking sacrifice. Yaseen\u2019s mother, Fatimah, carves out her own channel of subversion, in a political life hidden from her family.
