Turkey\u2019s parliament on Tuesday approved Sweden\u2019s accession to become a member of Nato, lifting a key hurdle to its entry into the military alliance.
\nPoliticians voted 287-55 in favour with four abstentions for the Nordic nation to become the 32nd member of the alliance.
\nThe approval will come into effect after its publication in the Official Gazette.
\nHungary is now the only Nato ally not to have ratified Sweden\u2019s accession, which needs to be approved by all member countries.
\nNato member Turkey had been delaying Sweden\u2019s membership for more than a year, accusing the country of being too lenient to groups that Ankara regards as security threats.
\nOn the other hand, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday invited Swedish leader Ulf Kristersson to Budapest to discuss Sweden’s Nato accession bid.
\nMr Orban has demanded “respect” from the Nordic country, a fellow European Union member.
\nIn a letter to Mr Kristersson, he said that “a more intensive political dialogue could contribute to reinforcing the mutual trust” between the two countries, allowing them to “further strengthen our political and security arrangements”.
\n“I invite you to visit Hungary at your earliest convenience to exchange views on all issues of common interest,” Mr Orban wrote in the letter seen by AFP.
