Sudan Events – Sumaya Sayed\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Iran condemned on Sunday the latest strikes by the United States and Britain on Yemen, saying they were seeking to \u201cescalate tensions and crises\u201d in the region.<\/p>\n American and British forces carried out fresh strikes against 18 Houthi targets in Yemen, in response to a wave of attacks by the Iran-backed group on Red Sea shipping.<\/p>\n \u201cWith such attacks, America and Britain seek to escalate tensions and crises in the region, and expand the scope of war and instability,\u201d Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cCertainly, this kind of arbitrary and aggressive military operation, aside from aggravating insecurity and instability in the region, will not achieve anything for these aggressor countries,\u201d Kanani added.<\/p>\n He further condemned the United States and Britain for failing to \u201ctake immediate and effective action\u201d to stop Israel\u2019s deadly campaign in Gaza.<\/p>\n The Houthis say their attacks on shipping around the Red Sea are in support of Palestinians in war-ravaged Gaza.<\/p>\n Israel\u2019s withering military campaign in Gaza began following the unprecedented October 7 attack on southern Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.<\/p>\n Iran backs Hamas but has denied any involvement in the October 7 attack.<\/p>\n Regional tensions have soared since the war erupted, stoking violence involving Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.<\/p>\n Following the Saturday attacks, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said the US \u201cwill not hesitate to take action, as needed, to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world\u2019s most critical waterways\u201d.<\/p>\n The Houthis\u2019 military spokesman Yahya Saree said the attacks would continue until \u201cthe aggression stops\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n The Islamic Republic has previously said it sees a \u201cduty\u201d to support what it calls \u201cresistance groups\u201d in the region, but insists they are \u201cindependent\u201d in decision and action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Sudan Events – Sumaya Sayed\u00a0 Iran condemned on Sunday the latest strikes by the United States and Britain on Yemen, saying they were seeking to \u201cescalate tensions and crises\u201d in the region.
