{"id":15863,"date":"2024-03-14T15:18:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T15:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=15863"},"modified":"2024-03-14T15:18:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T15:18:10","slug":"armenian-pm-calls-on-citizens-to-discuss-eu-membership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/14\/armenian-pm-calls-on-citizens-to-discuss-eu-membership\/","title":{"rendered":"Armenian PM Calls on Citizens to Discuss EU Membership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday called for broad public dialogue on the prospect of applying for EU membership, as the ex-Soviet country\u2019s ties with Russia fray.<br \/>\nMoscow\u2019s war in Ukraine has reinvigorated the EU\u2019s drive to enlarge, with Brussels putting EU-aspirants Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia on a formal membership path after years of reluctance.<br \/>\nArmenia\u2019s shift from Moscow highlights discontent over what the Caucasus nation\u2019s government has said was Russia\u2019s failure to protect it in the face of security threats from arch-foe neighbour Azerbaijan.<br \/>\nPashinyan on Thursday said that the possibility of joining the European Union \u201cmust become a widely discussed topic in society\u201d.<br \/>\nHis comments came after the European Parliament this week passed a resolution \u201con closer ties between the EU and Armenia\u201d, saying that Yerevan\u2019s eventual membership application \u201ccould set the stage for a transformative phase in EU-Armenia relations\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is yet another opportunity to discuss our vision of Armenia\u2019s future,\u201d Pashinyan told a government meeting in Yerevan.<br \/>\nHis cabinet, he added, \u201chas the political will to continue working towards a maximum deepening of Armenia\u2019s ties with the EU.\u201d<br \/>\nThe idea of joining the EU was being actively discussed within Pashinyan\u2019s political team over the last months, with Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan publicly speaking about Armenia\u2019s European aspirations.<br \/>\nA rift has widened between Yerevan and Moscow since last year when Armenia accused Russia of failing to stop Azerbaijan from capturing the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenian separatists.<br \/>\nPashinyan has repeatedly said that Armenia could quit the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a Moscow-led security alliance of several ex-Soviet republics.<br \/>\nOn Wednesday, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, warned against the move which would cause \u201cirreparable damage\u201d to the countries\u2019 ties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday called for broad public dialogue on the prospect of applying for EU membership, as the ex-Soviet country\u2019s ties with Russia fray.
