{"id":16058,"date":"2024-03-17T17:17:50","date_gmt":"2024-03-17T17:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=16058"},"modified":"2024-03-17T17:17:50","modified_gmt":"2024-03-17T17:17:50","slug":"ukmto-blast-near-merchant-ship-off-yemen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/17\/ukmto-blast-near-merchant-ship-off-yemen\/","title":{"rendered":"UKMTO: Blast Near Merchant Ship off Yemen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A vessel sailing off southern Yemen reported an explosion nearby on Sunday, a British maritime security agency said, the latest incident as Houthi militia has attacked shipping on the vital Red Sea route.<\/p>\n<p>United Kingdom Marine Trade Operations said a commercial ship \u201chas reported an explosion in close proximity to the vessel,\u201d causing no casualties or damage.<br \/>\nThere was no immediate claim of responsibility for the reported attack, which comes after Yemen\u2019s Iran-backed Houthis have threatened to expand the harassment campaign which has disrupted global trade.<\/p>\n<p>The militants have launched dozens of missile and drone strikes on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the past four months, actions they say are in solidarity with Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis say they are targeting Israel-linked shipping as part of an \u201caxis of resistance\u201d of Iran allies in protest at Israel\u2019s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, which leads an international coalition meant to protect Red Sea shipping, has since mid-January struck Houthi targets in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>The US Central Command said on Saturday its forces had \u201cdestroyed five unmanned surface vessels and one\u201d drone in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.<br \/>\nCENTCOM earlier said it had shot down a drone fired by the Houthis toward the Red Sea.<br \/>\nSuch exchanges have become frequent in the area, sending shipping insurance costs soaring and prompting many firms to detour around the southern tip of Africa.<br \/>\nOn Thursday militia leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said the group would expand their attacks to ships taking the longer route around Africa\u2019s Cape of Good Hope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies\u00a0 A vessel sailing off southern Yemen reported an explosion nearby on Sunday, a British maritime security agency said, the latest incident as Houthi militia has attacked shipping on the vital Red Sea route.
