{"id":18891,"date":"2024-04-16T18:52:16","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T15:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=18891"},"modified":"2024-04-16T18:52:16","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T15:52:16","slug":"muslim-school-student-loses-uk-court-appeal-over-prayer-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/16\/muslim-school-student-loses-uk-court-appeal-over-prayer-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Muslim School Student Loses UK Court Appeal over Prayer Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Muslim pupil lost a UK court challenge Tuesday against a top London school\u2019s ban on prayer rituals, in a case about freedom of religion in schools that captured national attention.<br \/>\nThe student took legal action against Michaela Community School in northwest London, claiming the policy was discriminatory and \u201cuniquely\u201d affected her faith due to its ritualized nature.<br \/>\nShe argued the school\u2019s prohibition of on-site prayer unlawfully breached her right to religious freedom and was \u201cthe kind of discrimination which makes religious minorities feel alienated from society\u201d.<br \/>\nThe High Court in London hearing the case was told the ban introduced last year stemmed from several dozen students beginning to pray in the school\u2019s yard, using blazers to kneel on.<br \/>\nIt then imposed the new rules due to concerns about a \u201cculture shift\u201d towards \u201csegregation between religious groups and intimidation within the group of Muslim pupils\u201d, the court reportedly heard.<br \/>\nIn a written ruling, judge Thomas Linden dismissed the pupil\u2019s arguments, ruling that by enrolling at the school she had effectively accepted being subject to restrictions on manifesting her faith.<br \/>\nResponding to the decision Katharine Birbalsingh, headteacher of Michaela Community School, said \u201ca school should be free to do what is right for the pupils it serves\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cSchools should not be forced by one child and her mother to change its approach simply because they have decided they don\u2019t like something at the school.\u201d<br \/>\nEducation Secretary Gillian Keegan also welcomed the ruling, saying \u201cheadteachers are best placed to make decisions in their school\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies A Muslim pupil lost a UK court challenge Tuesday against a top London school\u2019s ban on prayer rituals, in a case about freedom of religion in schools that captured national attention.
