French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed he did not rule out sending troops to Ukraine, saying the issue would \u201clegitimately\u201d arise if Russia broke through Ukrainian frontlines and Kyiv made such a request, published Thursday.<\/p>\n
The Economist said Macron gave the interview after delivering a keynote speech last week where he declared that Europe is \u201cmortal\u201d and could \u201cdie\u201d partly due to the threat posed by Russian aggression after its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
\n\u201cI\u2019m not ruling anything out, because we are facing someone who is not ruling anything out,\u201d said Macron when asked if he stood by comments earlier this year not excluding the sending of Western troops that sent shockwaves around Europe.<\/p>\n
Some analysts believe that Russia could be on the verge of launching a major new offensive in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Macron said \u201cif Russia decided to go further, we will in any case all have to ask ourselves this question\u201d of sending troops, describing his refusal to rule out such a move as a \u201cstrategic wake-up call for my counterparts.\u201d<\/p>\n
He described Russia as \u201ca power of regional destabilization\u201d and \u201ca threat to Europeans\u2019 security.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a clear strategic objective: Russia cannot win in Ukraine,\u201d Macron said.
\n\u201cIf Russia wins in Ukraine, there will be no security in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n
