Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Sunday announced he wanted to form a new EU parliament alliance, together with Austria\u2019s far-right party and the Czech centrist group of ex-premier Andrej Babis.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe take on the responsibility to launch this new platform and new faction. I want to make it clear that this is our goal,\u201d the nationalist premier told reporters at a joint press conference with Austria\u2019s Freedom Party (FPOe) leader Herbert Kickl and Babis of ANO, calling for other parties\u2019 support.
\nThe new alliance, presented as \u201cPatriots for Europe,\u201d will need support from parties from four other countries to be recognized as a group in the EU parliament.<\/p>\n
\u201cA new era begins here, and the first, perhaps decisive moment of this new era is the creation of a new European political faction that will change European politics,\u201d Orban said.<\/p>\n
The three men signed a \u201cpatriotic manifesto,\u201d promising \u201cpeace, security and development\u201d instead of the \u201cwar, migration and stagnation\u201d brought by the \u201cBrussels elite,\u201d according to Orban.<\/p>\n
Hungary on Monday takes on the rotating six-month EU presidency.<\/p>\n
Under the presidency, the central European country has vowed to push for a \u201cstrong European policy\u201d under the motto \u201cMake Europe Great Again,\u201d a nod to Orban\u2019s \u201cgood friend\u201d former US president Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Orban\u2019s Fidesz was a member of the center-right European People\u2019s Party — the European Parliament\u2019s biggest group — until it quit in 2021 amid wrangling over accusations of Hungary\u2019s democratic backsliding.<\/p>\n
Kickl\u2019s FPOe is part of the Identity and Democracy grouping, which also includes France\u2019s National Rally and Italy\u2019s League.<\/p>\n
