Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday brushed off US President Joe Biden\u2019s gaffe in which he mistakenly introduced him as Russian foe Vladimir Putin, saying \u201cwe can forget some mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
As he began a visit to Ireland, Zelenskyy told reporters at Shannon Airport that \u201cit\u2019s a mistake. I think United States gave a lot of support for Ukrainians. We can forget some mistakes, I think so.\u201d
\nZelenskyy will meet Irish leader Simon Harris at the airport later Saturday, their first bilateral meeting on Irish soil.<\/p>\n
Asked for his message to Ireland, Zelenskyy said: \u201cFirst of all, thank you so much for your support, thanks to Ireland for hosting a lot of Ukrainian refugees, you were with us from the very beginning of the Russian invasion.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris is expected to express Ireland\u2019s support for Ukraine\u2019s bid toward EU membership during the talks.<\/p>\n
Zelenskyy is making the visit on his way back from Washington, where he attended a summit marking NATO\u2019s 75th anniversary.
\nIt was at the summit that the 81-year-old Biden made the gaffe, before quickly correcting himself.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination, ladies and gentlemen, President Putin,\u201d Biden said as he announced a NATO-Ukraine compact.
\nBiden turned away from the lectern before coming back and exclaiming: \u201cPresident Putin! He\u2019s going to beat President Putin. President Zelenskyy – I\u2019m so focused on beating Putin we gotta worry about it. Anyway, Mr President.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zelenskyy immediately quipped that he was \u201cbetter\u201d than Putin, but the incident intensified concerns about Biden\u2019s age and mental acuity.<\/p>\n
