Yemen\u2019s government and the Iran-backed Houthis have agreed to halt tit-for-tat banking sanctions as they wrestle for control of the country\u2019s financial institutions, the United Nations said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The Houthis have been fighting an Arab-led coalition since March 2015, months after they seized the capital Sanaa and most of Yemen\u2019s population centres, forcing the internationally recognized government south to Aden.
\nThe Houthis and the government had in December committed to the UN-led roadmap to end the war, agreeing to work toward \u201cthe resumption of an inclusive political process.\u201d
\nOn Monday, the two sides informed Hans Grundberg, the UN envoy to Yemen, that they \u201cagreed on several measures to de-escalate,\u201d said a statement from Grundberg\u2019s office, which thanked Saudi Arabia for its \u201csignificant role\u201d in brokering the deal.<\/p>\n
It came as the warring parties were locked in a fight for control over the country\u2019s banks, with both facing a severe financial crunch.<\/p>\n
Their latest agreement involves \u201ccancelling all the recent decisions and procedures against banks by both sides and refraining in the future from any similar decisions or procedures,\u201d the envoy\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n
In May, the government-controlled central bank banned transactions with six banks in Houthi-held Sanaa for failing to abide by an order to relocate to Aden.<\/p>\n
After striking their latest agreement, the warring parties will convene \u201cmeetings to discuss all economic and humanitarian issues based on the(UN) roadmap,\u201d said Grundberg\u2019s office.<\/p>\n
It stressed \u201cthe need for the parties to collaborate toward an economy that benefits all Yemenis and supports the implementation of a nationwide ceasefire and the resumption of an inclusive political process.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement said the warring parties have also agreed to settle disputes over Yemenia , the country\u2019s national airline, which has accused the Houthis of freezing its funds held in Sanaa banks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
