{"id":29894,"date":"2024-08-05T17:19:49","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T14:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=29894"},"modified":"2024-08-05T17:19:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T14:19:49","slug":"top-russian-security-official-arrives-in-tehran-amid-middle-east-tension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/05\/top-russian-security-official-arrives-in-tehran-amid-middle-east-tension\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Russian Security Official Arrives in Tehran Amid Middle East Tension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sudan Events &#8211; Agencies\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s security council secretary, Sergei Shoigu, arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with the Iranian leadership including President Masoud Pezeshkian.<\/p>\n<p>The visit is taking place at a time of acute tension in the Middle East amid fears of a wider regional war after Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran last week.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has blamed Israel and said it will \u201cpunish\u201d it; Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Shoigu, who was Russia\u2019s defence minister before being moved to the security council in May, will also meet Iran\u2019s national security chief and the head of the general staff, Interfax said.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has cultivated closer ties with Iran since the start of its war with Ukraine and has said it is preparing to sign a wide-ranging cooperation agreement with the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p>In February Iran had provided Russia with a large number of powerful surface-to-surface ballistic missiles.
