Our nerves are stretched to their limits, our hands tremble with anticipation, and our eyes remain fixed on a dream that is soon to become a reality. At one point, some believed this dream was unattainable, yet today, it is being realized through the sacrifices of heroes, the determination of men, and the unwavering resolve of Taharqa.

The militia and its foreign backers fail to understand that Taharqa is our ancestor and that we are his descendants. We have countless paths to glory, for we are the very essence of greatness. We were the first people on Earth to establish a state and sovereignty, raising its banner high. Glory is our craft and our heritage.

“We are a people who do not accept mediocrity—
For us, it is triumph or the grave.
We offer our souls for greatness,
For no bride is won without a worthy dowry.”

The Kingdom of Kerma was the first state in history to raise the flag of sovereignty—before Egypt, Athens, Persia, or China. At that time, what is now Europe was nothing more than dense, uninhabited forests, and America was yet unknown to the world.

Sudanese hearts and eyes are fixed on their flag, which is about to be hoisted over the palace. “We have returned, Hemedti!”—a phrase borrowed from Lord Allenby when he occupied the Levant and set foot on the grave of Salah al-Din. Hemedti was nothing more than a street thug shaped by the coincidences of history and its intersections. He foolishly believed himself to be a valiant knight, a Tatar warlord destined to rule the land of the Two Niles. He never realized that our land is defended by thorns and steel. We are the cradle of civilization, the seeds of creation, the origin and the essence of human advancement. No nation can match us, no people stand equal to us—that is our truth, not mere pride.

We had our flag when most of the Arabian Peninsula (except for Yemen and the Levant) was an empty wasteland devoid of life. The lost Arab tribes perished, but our banner remained high. Since ancient times, we have been a deeply spiritual people, fearing our Creator, who has enveloped us in His grace and mercy. Meanwhile, the lost tribes of Arabia grew arrogant, corrupt, and defiant, and so they were destroyed. Now, others follow their path, while we rise once again. Some will fall, but our flag will remain aloft.

Our banner has fluttered over the banks of the Nile throughout history, defended by our ancestors at the cost of their lives. Now, it is our turn to make that sacrifice, and what a sacred sacrifice it is!

When the flag is raised on its mast, we will not celebrate simply because it has been hoisted—for that is an ordinary event for us, a nation born for victory, glory, and honor. We will celebrate because we are renewing our magnificent history of triumph. We will rejoice because we have once again proven—to ourselves and to the world—that we are the descendants of mighty emperors who ruled when most nations were still unborn. We will celebrate the revival of our history and the spirits of our great kings—Taharqa and Piye—who now hover joyfully, watching the heroism of their descendants.

This war has rekindled our sense of belonging and authenticity, allowing us to rediscover the history that invaders from all directions have tried to erase. They sought to sever our roots, to make us a nation without a past. But now, we see clearly.

So, thank you, Hemedti, and thank you, militia, for waking us from our slumber and confusion!

Throughout history, our land has been a graveyard for invaders. Now, our warriors continue the legacy of their ancestors. Nothing new—yet another invading force is being crushed and annihilated. Or, as the Westerners say, business as usual. The world may have tried to bury our history, but this war is forcing them to remember.

Hemedti grew arrogant, tyrannical, and refused to heed the voice of reason and kindness. He saw himself as the ultimate ruler of the land of the Two Niles. But now, he bows in humiliation, broken before the storm. And in this era, our storm is the bullet—merciless and unyielding.

As Zuhayr once said:
“Whoever defies the edge of the glass (diplomacy),
Will be forced to obey the sharp spears.”

Celebrate, my beloved people, and watch as your ancient-new flag is raised high once more. It has been lifted before—by Taharqa, Piye, Amara Dunqas, Abdallah Jamma, Al-Azhari, and Al-Mahjoub. And now, it is raised again by Burhan. Nothing new!

Our sons have watered this land with their pure blood, never hesitating, never faltering. This is our land, our homeland, and it shall remain so until the end of time.

When the flag ascends the mast, it is not just a piece of colored fabric being lifted—it is the blood that was shed, the sacrifices that were made. It rises as a symbol of all the pure souls who died so that our banner would remain flying high among the nations.

Wherever you are, stand in silence and bow your heads when the flag is raised. Do so in respect, gratitude, and recognition of those who gave their lives for us and for our homeland. For the flag is the blood of the martyrs—the symbol of their ultimate sacrifice.

We are your descendants, O Taharqa—may your spirit soar with joy over your land, the land of the Nile. What a noble sacrifice, what a difficult path. Only heroes recognize other heroes!

This land is ours.

(Published in “Sudanese Echoes”)

By Ali Askouri We are approaching a defining historical moment in our national history—one that embodies all our dreams, emotions, and deepest aspirations.
