Niko Kovac began his duties as head coach of the first football team of Borussia Dortmund, Germany, on Sunday, aiming to lead the team back to the top positions in the Bundesliga standings.<\/p>\n
The former Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Wolfsburg coach led his first training session after it was confirmed he would take over from Nuri Sahin, last Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Dortmund wrote on social media platform X: “First day, straight to the pitch. Welcome to Borussia Dortmund, Niko Kovac.”<\/p>\n
Sahin was forced to leave after Dortmund lost their first four matches this year.<\/p>\n
Mike Tielburg, the U19 coach, temporarily took over the team and managed to achieve positive results with one draw and two wins, hoping these results would help restore confidence within the team.<\/p>\n
Dortmund currently sits in 10th place in the Bundesliga, but is only 4 points behind the top four, which guarantees a spot in next season’s Champions League. The team also remains in the Champions League knockout round, where they will face Sporting Lisbon.<\/p>\n
Sebastian Kehl, the sporting director, stated after their 2-1 win over Hoffenheim on Saturday: “The three points will help us a lot.”<\/p>\n
He added, “We are still in the competition. The standings are very close. The coaching staff tried to stay positive and give the team energy. We deserve these results.”<\/p>\n
Kehl emphasized, “But we need to stay on the same path, and things will not change under Niko Kovac. We must work hard and achieve the desired results, and then we will continue to compete in all competitions.”<\/p>\n
Kovac has a full week of training ahead of him, preparing for his first match in charge against Stuttgart, the runners-up from last season, next Saturday.<\/p>\n
Defender Waldemar Anton commented: “We will definitely train well in the coming days.”<\/p>\n
Kovac, who led Frankfurt to the 2018 German Cup and Bayern to the domestic double the following year, will be officially presented in the coming days.<\/p>\n
Kovac said in a statement upon signing until 2026: “I am convinced that we can achieve many great things together in the future.”<\/p>\n
