Galatasaray has launched a scathing attack on Jos\u00e9 Mourinho, the head coach of their fierce rivals Fenerbah\u00e7e, accusing him of making “racist remarks” following the goalless draw between the two teams in the Istanbul derby on Sunday, as part of the 25th round of the Turkish Super League.<\/p>\n
The club announced its intention to pursue legal action against Mourinho for “offensive comments” directed at the Turkish people. Galatasaray also plans to file complaints with FIFA and UEFA.<\/p>\n
Reports suggest that Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Roma, and Porto, made controversial comments about Galatasaray\u2019s bench, saying, “They jump like monkeys” after an early challenge between the two teams. He also implied that the game was better officiated because a Turkish referee was not in charge.<\/p>\n
Galatasaray\u2019s statement accused Mourinho of consistently making offensive remarks about Turkish people since taking charge of Fenerbah\u00e7e in the summer of 2024.<\/p>\n
The club added: “Mourinho\u2019s rhetoric in the Istanbul derby has gone beyond unethical remarks\u2014it has escalated into outright inhumane language. We officially declare that we are initiating legal action regarding his racist statements and will submit formal complaints to both FIFA and UEFA.”<\/p>\n
Mourinho has previously faced fines and suspensions for his comments about referees. His criticism continued after the derby, which was officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, following a request from both teams for a foreign referee.<\/p>\n
“I went to the referees’ dressing room after the match and thanked them,” Mourinho said. “I told Vincic, \u2018Thank you for coming to officiate a big game.\u2019 Then I turned to the fourth official (a Turkish referee) and told him, \u2018If you had been in charge of this game, it would have been a disaster.\u2019”<\/p>\n
Mourinho also praised Vincic for not booking Fenerbah\u00e7e defender Yusuf Ak\u00e7ayik early in the match, despite heated protests from Galatasaray\u2019s bench.<\/p>\n
“If a Turkish referee had been in charge, after the first dive in the first minute, their bench would have jumped like monkeys,” Mourinho said. “With a Turkish referee, our defender would have been booked in the first minute, and within five minutes, I would have had to substitute him.”<\/p>\n
Fenerbah\u00e7e, currently second in the league, six points behind leaders Galatasaray, responded with a statement dismissing the accusations as “deliberate misinterpretation.”<\/p>\n
“The words used by Jos\u00e9 Mourinho to describe the exaggerated reaction of the opponent\u2019s coaching staff cannot be classified as racist in any way,” Fenerbah\u00e7e\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n
Mourinho took charge of Fenerbah\u00e7e last summer after a three-season spell with Roma, where he won the UEFA Conference League in 2022.
