\u201cWhat is happening in Sudan is not only a humanitarian crisis. It is a crisis of humanity itself,\u201d said Mona Rishmawi, spokesperson for the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, in a statement regarding the war that has raged in the country for over two years.<\/p>\n
The mission condemned the widespread use of sexual violence, the deaths of children due to hunger, and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. \u201cWhile bombs and bullets dominate the headlines in Sudan, a quieter \u2014 yet perhaps more deadly \u2014 war is being waged on the bodies of women, girls, and marginalized communities,\u201d Rishmawi added.<\/p>\n
The war in Sudan began in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).<\/p>\n
The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of 14.3 million people \u2014 the largest forced displacement in the world, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).<\/p>\n
The Fact-Finding Mission also reported increased use of heavy weaponry by both sides in targeting civilian areas.<\/p>\n
Mohamed Chande Othman, head of the mission, stated, \u201cCivilians continue to bear the brunt,\u201d describing a conflict that is becoming increasingly \u201ccomplex and brutal.\u201d<\/p>\n
