A more refined, deeper, and longer-lasting form of influence has emerged: soft power.

As I previously noted, soft power is “the ability to attract and influence others without coercion—through inspiration and appeal, rather than force or threats.” It is power built on cultural attraction, political values, and foreign policy. Its significance lies in its ability to achieve objectives more effectively, at lower cost, and with greater peace.

The tools of soft power are varied and wide-ranging, encompassing everything that can create positive influence in minds and hearts. Foremost among them are culture and the arts. Literary works, theater, cinema, and music that transcend borders and languages serve as ambassadors in their own right. They build bridges between nations, showcase values and beauty, and dismantle stereotypes.

Education and scientific research are another cornerstone of soft power. Attracting students and researchers from across the globe not only enriches human knowledge but also forges lasting networks of relationships and demonstrates a society’s openness and progress.

Foreign policy and diplomacy play a vital role as well. Commitment to humanitarian values, the provision of relief aid, and active participation in resolving international conflicts enhance a nation’s standing and win it not only respect but also affection.

Media and social networks cannot be overlooked, for they are powerful tools in disseminating ideas and values, shaping public opinion, and projecting a positive image of societies. Similarly, sports serve as a global platform for peace and unity. Major sporting events bring people together from every corner of the world, breaking down barriers and elevating the spirit of fair competition.

Soft power, therefore, is not an illusion—it is a reality rooted in deep and lasting influence. It is the power of persuasion, not subjugation; the power of inspiration, not compulsion. In our era, nations that master the art of deploying these tools are the ones best positioned to achieve their ambitions and to shape a more harmonious and understanding world.

By Mowafaq Abdelrahman Mohamed At the outset of this follow-up article on soft power, it is important to emphasize that in today’s world—where interests intertwine and cultures intersect—power is no longer confined to military might or economic dominance alone.
