{"id":54702,"date":"2025-09-23T03:16:22","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T00:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=54702"},"modified":"2025-09-23T03:16:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T00:16:22","slug":"trial-of-riek-machar-begins-on-treason-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/23\/trial-of-riek-machar-begins-on-treason-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial of Riek Machar Begins on \u201cTreason\u201d Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amid tight security measures, the trial of South Sudan\u2019s First Vice President Riek Machar on charges of \u201ctreason\u201d commenced on Monday in the capital, Juba.<\/p>\n<p>Machar\u2019s lawyer, Jerry Raimundo Lej, described the trial as \u201cunconstitutional, illegal, and invalid,\u201d arguing that Machar still enjoys immunity as the sitting vice president.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, seven of Machar\u2019s allies, including the Minister of Petroleum, were also charged.<\/p>\n<p>In court, Machar\u2019s lawyer called for the immediate release of \u201cRiek Machar Teny, the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, along with the seven accused, who have been detained unconstitutionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Agu Onny Ohisa Egili dismissed the defense\u2019s arguments as \u201cweak and baseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The South Sudanese government accuses Machar of supporting the White Army during clashes with the army in the town of Nasir in the northeast in March, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians and the displacement of more than 80,000 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amid tight security measures, the trial of South Sudan\u2019s First Vice President Riek Machar on charges of \u201ctreason\u201d commenced on Monday in the capital, Juba.
