Sudan\u2019s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, delivered Sudan\u2019s statement before the 16th Ministerial Conference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).<\/p>\n
In his address, the ambassador outlined the scale of the systematic targeting and destruction carried out by the rebel militia against the country\u2019s infrastructure and economy, including major production and industrial projects, as well as key ministries, institutions, and agencies linked to financial and banking systems.<\/p>\n
He added that prior to the outbreak of the militia\u2019s insurgency, Sudan had made significant progress toward joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, all preparatory work and arrangements were temporarily halted due to the rebellion.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Hamid emphasized Sudan\u2019s vast and diverse natural resources\u2014rarely found elsewhere\u2014including gold, oil, and extensive agricultural wealth, highlighting the country\u2019s major investment potential, particularly in agriculture and production, at a time when the world faces growing food and water crises.<\/p>\n
He also referred to Sudan\u2019s forest resources, noting that, in coordination with UNCTAD, the country had made preparations to host a regional conference on gum arabic in Khartoum. These plans were suspended following the outbreak of the militia\u2019s rebellion.<\/p>\n
Concluding his statement, the ambassador underscored the importance of building the capacities of least developed countries to integrate into the global economy. He pointed to the challenges facing developing nations, especially the digital divide, in an era when trade and supply chains increasingly rely on digital technologies, including artificial intelligence.
