The city had been under a tight RSF siege since May 10, 2024, preventing humanitarian aid from reaching civilians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Terrifying Escalation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RSF announced on Sunday that it had seized control of El Fasher and the headquarters of the Sudanese Army\u2019s 6th Infantry Division.<br \/>\nUN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres warned on Monday of a \u201chorrific escalation\u201d of the conflict in El Fasher, describing the situation as \u201cunbearable\u201d and the suffering of Sudan\u2019s people as \u201cbeyond endurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Gruesome Massacre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Sudan Doctors\u2019 Network reported Monday that RSF fighters carried out ethnically targeted killings in El Fasher, looting medical facilities and pharmacies.<br \/>\nIn a press statement, the network said the militia executed unarmed civilians based on ethnicity in what it called a \u201ccrime of ethnic cleansing.\u201d<br \/>\nField reports indicate dozens of victims, though access to the affected areas remains extremely difficult due to total security collapse.<br \/>\n\u201cThe RSF not only took lives but also looted hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies in the areas it invaded \u2014 effectively destroying what remained of the city\u2019s healthcare system,\u201d the statement added, condemning the violations as \u201ca blatant breach of international humanitarian law that prohibits attacks on civilians and medical facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forced Displacement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Sunday that hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped amid the intensifying fighting in El Fasher.<br \/>\nUN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said that as fighters advance deeper into the city and escape routes are cut off, civilians remain \u201ctrapped in terror,\u201d facing shelling, hunger, and lack of access to food, healthcare, or safety.<br \/>\nHe expressed grave concern over reports of civilian casualties and forced displacement, calling for an immediate ceasefire in El Fasher, across Darfur, and throughout Sudan.<br \/>\n\u201cCivilians must be allowed safe passage and access to humanitarian aid,\u201d Fletcher said. \u201cThose fleeing must be able to do so safely and with dignity, while those who remain \u2014 including local aid workers \u2014 must be protected. Attacks on civilians, hospitals, and humanitarian operations must stop immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calls for International Intervention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sudanese Prime Minister Kamal Idris urged international organizations to \u201cintervene immediately,\u201d telling Al Jazeera that reports from El Fasher and Bara show RSF forces committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing. He praised the Sudanese Armed Forces for their \u201cresilience and adherence to humanitarian law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEl Fasher Has Fallen, But Darfur\u2019s Future Has Not\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Darfur Governor and Sudan Liberation Movement leader Mini Arko Minawi acknowledged Monday that El Fasher had fallen to the RSF but stressed that \u201cthe fall of El Fasher does not mean surrendering Darfur\u2019s future to violent groups.\u201d<br \/>\nPosting on X (formerly Twitter), Minawi called for the protection of civilians and an independent investigation into the atrocities committed \u201caway from the public eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe World Is Watching\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mossad Bolus, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for African Affairs, urged the RSF to act immediately to protect civilians and prevent further suffering in El Fasher.<br \/>\nHe called on RSF commanders to issue and publicize clear orders ensuring the safety of civilians, humanitarian workers, and relief operations, stressing the need to open humanitarian corridors immediately.<br \/>\n\u201cThe world is watching El Fasher \u2014 and watching the RSF\u2019s actions closely,\u201d Bolus warned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Horrific Footage Circulates Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Numerous videos emerging from El Fasher since Sunday show RSF fighters terrorizing and executing civilians in cold blood.<br \/>\nThe Joint Forces Command confirmed the death of its spokesperson, Colonel Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, who was killed defending the city, along with war correspondent Asiya Khalifa, known for her extensive coverage from El Fasher.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent Muammar Ibrahim was reportedly detained by RSF fighters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unprecedented Brutality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Videos circulating on social media reveal the brutality and inhumanity of RSF actions against civilians, depicting acts that observers say amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.<br \/>\nThe international community\u2019s muted response \u2014 issuing only generic statements without direct condemnation \u2014 has sparked outrage, while political groups aligned with the RSF have expressed thinly veiled approval.<br \/>\nEven groups typically calling for peace, such as \u201cSumood,\u201d have issued vague and cautious statements, stopping short of condemning RSF atrocities outright \u2014 a contrast to their loud criticism of the Sudanese army for far lesser incidents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facing a Humanitarian Catastrophe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adam Regal, spokesperson for the Darfur Displaced Persons Association, described the situation as \u201ccatastrophic.\u201d<br \/>\nHe told Al-Muhaqiq that hundreds of displaced families had fled toward Tawila and possibly Jebel Marra under dire humanitarian conditions.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are facing a massive tragedy,\u201d Regal said. \u201cPeople are being terrorized, killed, and displaced. Urgent life-saving aid is needed \u2014 water, healthcare, nutrition, shelter, protection, education, and psychosocial support.\u201d<br \/>\nHe appealed to the UN and humanitarian agencies to provide minimum essential services to survivors living in horrific conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA War Without Balance\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saleh Mansour, head of the Sudan Liberation Movement Office in the Middle East, described the humanitarian situation as \u201cextremely dire.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said civilians in El Fasher were \u201cstripped of everything \u2014 food, water, and safety \u2014 and are being executed on an ethnic basis.\u201d<br \/>\nMansour told Al-Muhaqiq that the battle was never balanced, as RSF fighters used drones and heavy weaponry against small army units under siege and starvation for over a year and a half.<br \/>\n\u201cDespite that,\u201d he said, \u201cgovernment forces fought bravely, repelling more than 250 attacks before being overwhelmed. The RSF may hold the city now, but it will not be able to maintain control.
