UN Women warned that there is growing evidence that rape is being used \u201cdeliberately and systematically\u201d in Sudan, stressing that women and girls \u201care not mere statistics \u2014 they are a measure of our shared humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a report released Tuesday, UN Women focused on the gendered dimensions of food insecurity in Sudan.<\/p>\n
Anna Mutavati, UN Women\u2019s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, said: \u201cEvery day the world delays action on Sudan, another woman gives birth under bombardment, buries her child from hunger, or disappears without justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added that women have reported suffering from hunger, displacement, rape, and bombardment in El Fasher \u2014 \u201cthe epicenter of Sudan\u2019s latest catastrophe\u201d \u2014 where pregnant women have been forced to give birth in the streets after the last remaining maternity hospital was looted and destroyed.<\/p>\n
The militias seized control of El Fasher in late October after more than 500 days of siege, amid widespread reports of atrocities, including summary executions and sexual violence.<\/p>\n
Mutavati said thousands of women and girls have fled to other areas of North Darfur, including Tawila, about 70 kilometers away, as well as Kurma and Mellit, where humanitarian presence remains \u201cextremely limited.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat women are telling us,\u201d she said, \u201cis that every step they take \u2014 to fetch water, collect firewood, or queue for food \u2014 carries the risk of sexual assault.\u201d<\/p>\n
She warned that women\u2019s bodies have \u201cbecome a crime scene in Sudan,\u201d emphasizing that \u201cthere are no longer any safe places\u201d for them to receive basic protection or psychosocial care.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
