Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool\u2019s captain, described his team\u2019s current situation this season as \u201ca mess,\u201d urging all players to take more responsibility and show \u201cmanhood,\u201d while admitting they are letting down their Dutch manager Arne Slot.
\nVan Dijk\u2019s strong comments came after Liverpool\u2019s heavy 3\u20130 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday \u2014 the team\u2019s sixth loss in seven Premier League matches \u2014 which dropped the defending champions to 11th place.
\nVan Dijk said: \u201cWe are definitely letting Slot down, but we are also letting ourselves down. We need to look at ourselves first, then help each other get out of this mess, because right now, it\u2019s a mess.\u201d
\nHe added: \u201cAs champions, we cannot be in this situation we\u2019re in now. What are we going to do about it? We will try to turn things around \u2014 and that\u2019s the mentality everyone must have.\u201d
\nThe Liverpool captain admitted there is anger in the dressing room, but stressed the team does not have time to point fingers, especially with a run of seven matches in 22 days.
\nHe explained: \u201cIt\u2019s easy to point fingers, but we have to do this together. What I want is for everyone to take responsibility on the pitch. We must do that to push each other to be better.\u201d
\nVan Dijk urged his teammates to show \u201cmanhood,\u201d saying:
