{"id":5921,"date":"2023-11-29T13:15:14","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T13:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=5921"},"modified":"2023-11-29T13:15:14","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T13:15:14","slug":"piano-mercury-sells-for-1-7m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/29\/piano-mercury-sells-for-1-7m\/","title":{"rendered":"Piano Mercury Sells for \u00a31.7m"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Agencies &#8211; Sudan Events\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A piano used by late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury to compose songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody has sold for a record \u00a31.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,400 of the star\u2019s possessions were sold for a total of \u00a312,172,290 at an auction run by Sotheby\u2019s in London on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mercury bought the Yamaha Baby Grand Piano in 1975 after searching to find his \u201cperfect piano\u201d, and later used it to develop other songs such as Don\u2019t Stop Me Now and Somebody To Love.<\/p>\n<p>Before the auction, Sotheby\u2019s said they expected the piano to sell for between \u00a32 million and \u00a33 million.<\/p>\n<p>Other top-selling items included handwritten working lyrics for Bohemian Rhapsody, which sold for \u00a31.4 million, while Mercury\u2019s rainbow-coloured satin jacket sold for \u00a3203,200.<\/p>\n<p>A silver snake bangle worn in the Bohemian Rhapsody video in 1975 sold for almost 100 times its estimate at \u00a3698,500, Sotheby\u2019s said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a sparkling silver sequinned cat suit worn by Mercury on tours in 1977 and 1979 was sold for \u00a3139,700.<\/p>\n<p>The items came up for sale in the first of six auctions devoted to Mercury\u2019s never-before-seen private collection.<\/p>\n<p>Sotheby\u2019s said a record 2,000 people from 61 countries registered to bid for the 59 lots on Wednesday, all of which found a buyer.<\/p>\n<p>Sotheby\u2019s Europe chairman Oliver Barker said: \u201cIt has been a once-in-a-lifetime privilege for all of us at Sotheby\u2019s to celebrate the legend that is Freddie Mercury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have almost lost count of the number of auctions I have presided over from this rostrum, but I know for certain that I will never forget bringing the hammer down tonight \u2013 nor will I forget the electric atmosphere that both imbued the auction room and that has taken over our galleries for the past month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Auctioning of the treasured piano came a month after thousands of items from Mercury\u2019s beloved home \u2013 Garden Lodge in Kensington, west London \u2013 went on display as part of the Freddie Mercury: A World Of His Own exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Overwhelmed by the response to the exhibition, Mercury\u2019s close friend Mary Austin decided the piano should be offered \u201cwithout reserve\u201d to open the possibility of bidding to a broader base of potential buyers.<\/p>\n<p>Personal items from the collection will be sold across auctions in September.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the money raised will go to the Elton John Aids Foundation, considering Mercury\u2019s death aged 45 in 1991 following health complications relating to Aids.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday and Friday, there will be two live auctions: The first dedicated to Mercury \u201cOn Stage\u201d, the second dedicated to his life \u201cAt Home\u201d, and to the objects he loved and lived with at Garden Lodge.<\/p>\n<p>These will be followed by three more online auctions titled In Love With Japan and part one and two of Crazy Little Things<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agencies &#8211; Sudan Events\u00a0 A piano used by late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury to compose songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody has sold for a record \u00a31.7 million.
