It is evident that this move was intended to empower the new General Staff, headed by General Yasser al-Atta, by strengthening its authority over daily command and control operations and granting it full authority without overlapping decisions arising from conflicting jurisdictions. At the same time, the experience of the leadership members will continue to be utilized in shaping the army’s strategic direction, without interfering in day-to-day operations.

The changes that began with the appointment of the General Staff—and the subsequent decisions—are aimed at strengthening the army’s performance in the war it has been waging against the Rapid Support Forces militia for the past three years.

At this level, these developments have generated a sense of optimism and hope regarding the acceleration of control and momentum, particularly given General Yasser al-Atta’s extensive experience and combat capabilities. He is a seasoned field commander whose tenure as a member of the Sovereign Council has also deepened his political awareness. He is, therefore, a fighting commander with political insight. His statements throughout the years of war have played a major role in reinforcing political resolve along the path of confrontation, in addition to their military significance.

These positions have contributed to consolidating and deepening Sudanese awareness of the nature of the aggression, as well as the states standing behind the militia and supplying it with weapons and mercenaries. Such stances have had a profound impact on both the public and the army, strengthening their resolve in the face of calls for surrender through the so-called “Hariri negotiation channel.”

There is speculation that the recent changes within the military institution may be followed by political developments that could reshape the political landscape outside the corridors of the army. In my view, what is politically needed is the practical strengthening of popular support for the army in this battle. The more discussion there is about political power-sharing, the more it awakens the forces of ambition, prompting political actors to focus on securing their share—inevitably at the expense of the existential priority: preserving the country, which is facing aggression targeting its very existence.

Therefore, the more appropriate and beneficial political course would be to activate both the Sovereign Council and the Council of Ministers to fill the vacuum in the country’s political administration. This is especially urgent in an economy shaken by instability and influenced by vested interest groups, and in foreign policy that still seeks to attract regional organizations incapable of standing up to the capitals that host them—capitals that are themselves deeply involved in the war against Sudan. Moreover, these actors are well-versed in manipulating political finance within a region marked by deep divisions. No one will pay attention to us until they witness the actions of our army on the ground; at that point, they will come seeking relations. The rule in international relations is that the weak are devoured.

There is also a pressing need to activate and empower security, judicial, and law enforcement institutions, and to enable the press to free itself so it can help liberate the national conscience—rising above narrow self-interest toward integrity.

As for political parties, they must begin thinking about the day after liberation and focus on rebuilding and cleansing the country of what has befallen it. They should intensify efforts to formulate governance programs capable of guiding the country through transitional phases toward sustainable political stability.

We stand before a mission—now or never. The path has become clear, and the signs of victory are beginning to emerge.

Al-Musalami Al-Kabashi The decision taken by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on April 2—announced today by the official spokesperson of the Sudanese Armed Forces—revoked Decision No. 164 of 2023, which had appointed General Shams al-Din Kabashi as Deputy Commander-in-Chief, and named both General Yasser al-Atta and General Ibrahim Jaber …

[19

post-61391","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-opinion
["GET
