The vote is widely viewed as a referendum on President Donald Trump’s performance during the first two years of his second term.

Initial projections showed former Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, defeating Republican Michael Whatley to win North Carolina’s Senate seat, marking the first Republican seat flipped during election night. Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff was also re-elected in Georgia, while Representative Chris Pappas won in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate.

In the House of Representatives, preliminary estimates from election desks projected that Democrats would win at least 210 of the 435 seats, compared with at least 160 for Republicans, putting them within reach of the 218 seats needed for a majority. Democrats need a net gain of three seats to regain control of the House and four seats in the Senate, where Republicans currently hold a 53–47 majority.

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms secured a historic victory in Georgia’s gubernatorial race, becoming the first Black woman ever elected governor of a US state. Other races also showed a Democratic trend in states including Ohio, Texas and South Carolina, according to preliminary projections.

The elections witnessed high turnout, with more than 57 million early votes cast. Voters’ main concerns centred on inflation, the rising cost of living, the war with Iran, and immigration policies. Vote counting is expected to continue in several key states over the coming hours and days before final results determining control of Congress are announced.

Democrats made significant early gains in the US midterm elections held on Tuesday, flipping a Republican-held Senate seat in North Carolina and establishing a clear lead in the race for control of the House of Representatives.
