Climate crunch talks at COP28 continue on Tuesday as global powers attempt to reach a deal to halt global warming in closed-door meetings.<\/p>\n

A new draft released Monday of the Global Stocktake \u2014 the part of talks that assesses where the world is at with its climate goals and how it can reach them \u2014 called for countries to reduce \u201cconsumption and production of fossil fuels, in a just, orderly and equitable manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

A fine-tuned version is expected Tuesday, but many observers expect the finale to be delayed, as often seen at the UN talks.<\/p>\n

The host-nation proposed deadline of 11 a.m. on Tuesday for a final deal expired due to differences over wording, especially around fossil fuels. COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber has urged countries to finalize the text, but negotiations are currently running over.<\/p>\n

The UAE presidency says the wording follows tense talks and is the most ambitious outcome around fossil fuel action in years. The latest draft deal also includes calls to accelerate zero- and low-emission technologies – including renewables and nuclear power – in language similar to a joint statement reached last month by the United States and China, the world\u2019s two biggest emitters.<\/p>\n

On Monday, COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber told negotiators that \u201cthe time to decide is now\u201d adding that negotiations \u201chave made progress\u201d but acknowledged there were gaps to address.<\/p>\n

At the vast COP28 site on Tuesday, protestors continued to voice their fears about the impacts of climate change, especially in developing nations and Pacific Island nations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
