{"id":7624,"date":"2023-12-13T12:04:12","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T12:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=7624"},"modified":"2023-12-13T12:04:12","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T12:04:12","slug":"awadia-kuku-sudanese-women-of-courge-award-by-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/13\/awadia-kuku-sudanese-women-of-courge-award-by-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Awadia Kuku: Sudanese Women of Courge Award by US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Agencies &#8211; Sudan Events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awadia Mahmoud Kuku, active since 1979 in fighting for the rights of Khartoum tea sellers, was awarded the 10th annual International Women of Courage Award by the U.S. State Department.<\/p>\n<p>According to World Tea News , the International Women of Courage Award brings attention to women who have shown leadership in working for the equality of women and who have shown outstanding levels of courage.<br \/>\nMahmoud with Secretary Kerry at the Courage Awards<br \/>\n\u201cAwadia Mahmoud has been fearless in confronting government authorities, challenging unfair social norms, and overcoming economic obstacles,\u201d the State Department said in making the award.<br \/>\nAwadia received the award from United States Secretary of State John Kerry.<br \/>\nThere were fourteen awardees this year.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1979, Awadia has been selling tea in Khartoum. She helped develop a union of women selling tea and food on roadsides and in other small businesses.<br \/>\nThere union grew to include 8,000 women.<br \/>\nThe union\u2019s activities were intended to protect these workers from harassment and mistreatment.
