{"id":7762,"date":"2023-12-14T16:44:58","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T16:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=7762"},"modified":"2023-12-14T16:44:58","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T16:44:58","slug":"imran-khans-trial-behind-closed-doors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/14\/imran-khans-trial-behind-closed-doors\/","title":{"rendered":"Imran Khan\u2019s trial behind closed doors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sudan Events \u2013 Sumaya Sayed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The trial of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan will be held behind closed doors, his lawyer said on Thursday, a day after he was indicted for leaking state secrets, blocking his chances to contest a national election in February.<br \/>\nThe charges are related to a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan\u2019s ambassador in Washington last year, which Khan is accused of making public.<br \/>\nThe decision was taken at the opening of the trial on a jail premises in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, said the lawyer, Naeem Panjutha, in a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.<br \/>\n\u201cThe plea to hold an in-camera trial has been accepted,\u201d he said, adding no media will be allowed.<br \/>\nLawyers and human rights groups say a closed door proceeding does not fulfil requirements of a fair trial.<br \/>\nKhan has previously said the contents of the cable appeared in the media from other sources.<br \/>\nA guilty verdict under the Official Secrets Act could bring up to 10 years in prison, lawyers said.<br \/>\nIt is the second time Khan has been indicted on the same charges after a superior court struck down an earlier indictment on procedural grounds.<br \/>\nThe trial is being conducted in jail on security grounds.
