{"id":8200,"date":"2023-12-17T14:46:31","date_gmt":"2023-12-17T14:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=8200"},"modified":"2023-12-17T14:46:31","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T14:46:31","slug":"lebanese-army-rescues-51-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/17\/lebanese-army-rescues-51-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese Army Rescues 51 People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sudan Events \u2013 Sumaya Sayed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lebanon on Sunday rescued more than 50 people, mostly Syrians, from a sinking migrant boat off the country\u2019s north coast, the army said.<br \/>\nThe military obtained \u201cinformation about a vessel that was sinking off the coast of Tripoli while it was being used for illegal people smuggling\u201d, the army said in a statement, referring to a city in north Lebanon.<br \/>\nNaval forces were able to \u201crescue 51 people aboard, including two Palestinians and 49 Syrians\u201d, the statement added.<br \/>\nThe Lebanese Red Cross helped provide assistance to those rescued, according to the statement, which did not specify where the boat was headed.<br \/>\nMigrants, asylum seekers and refugees leaving by boat from Lebanon are generally seeking a better life in Europe, and often head for the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus, less than 200 kilometers (125 miles) away.<br \/>\nLebanon hosts around two million Syrians, authorities say, while some 800,000 are registered with the United Nations &#8211; the world\u2019s highest number of refugees per capita.<br \/>\nLebanon\u2019s economy collapsed in late 2019, turning the country into a launchpad for migrants. Authorities often announce they have thwarted smuggling operations by sea, or the arrest of both smugglers and would-be migrants.<br \/>\nLebanese nationals have also been making the treacherous voyage towards Europe alongside Syrians fleeing war and economic woes in their country, as well as Palestinian refugees.<br \/>\nOn December 1, Lebanon\u2019s army said it disrupted a smuggling operation that saw 110 people, mostly from Syria, attempting to leave the country by sea.<br \/>\nSunday\u2019s rescue comes amid weeks of conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, with skirmishes also across the Lebanon-Israel border, mainly between the Israeli army and Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah group, a Hamas ally<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sudan Events \u2013 Sumaya Sayed Lebanon on Sunday rescued more than 50 people, mostly Syrians, from a sinking migrant boat off the country\u2019s north coast, the army said.
