{"id":8775,"date":"2023-12-22T11:51:38","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T11:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/?p=8775"},"modified":"2023-12-22T11:51:38","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T11:51:38","slug":"foreign-policy-biden-pressured-over-sudan-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudanevents.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/22\/foreign-policy-biden-pressured-over-sudan-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign Policy: Biden Pressured over Sudan war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Agencies &#8211; Sudan Events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A report published by Foreign Policy Magazine on Friday confirmed that American lawmakers are pressing to correct the war situation in the Sudan and limit the accompanying atrocities, indicating that these efforts include a message to the UAE.<br \/>\nLegislators are putting pressure on President Joe Biden administration to take a more assertive approach towards the war in Sudan, particularly with the continued violent fighting and growing chaos after the \u201cfailure\u201d of mediation efforts to stop the conflict, according to the magazine.<br \/>\nThe war that broke out in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April led to the displacement of 7.1 million people, according to what the United Nations announced on Thursday, describing it as \u201cthe largest displacement crisis in the world.\u201d<br \/>\nStephan Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that the recent battles in the center of the country forced 300,000 people to flee, and \u201cthese new operations raise the number of displaced people to 7.1 million,\u201d including 1.5 million who took refuge in neighboring countries, according to Agence France-Presse.<br \/>\nSenators call on the US administration to appoint a new special envoy to Sudan, with the aim of breathing \u201cnew life into US policy on the conflict,\u201d which has been overshadowed by other conflicts taking place in Europe and the Middle East.<br \/>\nAttention is turning to Tom Perriello, a former Democratic congressman and diplomat in the administration of former US President Barack Obama, to fill the position of US special envoy to Sudan.<br \/>\nThere are still consultations about the powers of this envoy, and whether he will submit his reports directly to the US President or to the Secretary of State, as the legislators want a high-level envoy with broad powers, according to the report.<br \/>\nPerriello did not respond to Foreign Policy\u2019s inquiries about the matter.<br \/>\nThe UAE&#8217;s support for the RSF arouses the anger of the US Congress, and a group of lawmakers took the unusual step of sending a direct letter to the UAE Foreign Minister condemning support for the RSF, warning that this could harm US-Emirati relations, according to a copy of the letter seen by Foreign Policy.<br \/>\nA US State Department spokesman told the magazine: \u201cWe have directly raised our concerns with Emirati officials regarding reports of the UAE\u2019s support for the RSF.
