Kosti’s Trade Impacted by Medani Events

The developments in Medani cast their shadow over the commercial activity in the rest of the town of the region, particularly the town of Kosti, which is considered a meeting place for states and trade from the west, south and east via Medani after it lost commercial contact with Khartoum due to the war. The city of Medani constitutes a crossing point and connection with the port of Port Sudan, and its industrial zone compensated for the loss of Khartoum. Citizen Mudawi Al-Khalifa pointed out the increasing reverse movement of citizens to the countryside, and with it, the displacement of national capital present in the city to secure their goods and money began, which affected the banking sector and the market. He pointed to the scarcity of manufactured consumer goods due to the stopping of the Medani and Khartoum line and the reduction or cessation of production in local factories. He said in statement to Sudan Events that the commodities available now are the stored product, which has increased their prices.
In addition to the recession in agricultural production due to the small population of the city after the majority migrated to the villages and the lack of liquidity among those present, however, the prices of vegetables witnessed a decline with the doubling of the prices of manufactured consumer goods.
It is noted that the scarcity of some commodities led to Ethiopia for importing them via Damazin, and some goods such as cigarettes were imported from South Sudan.
He also pointed out that the transportation sector is almost at a standstill, except for some long-term trips to Atbara-Shendi and Port Sudan.
