Catherine Colonna, Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French government, said that she spoke by phone today, Wednesday, with her Djiboutian counterpart, Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssef, about the situation in the Red Sea and Sudan.
Catherine stressed the importance of respecting freedom of navigation, which constitutes a basic principle in international law, and indicated that France will continue to take all appropriate measures to ensure safety at sea, as it did by deploying the Languedoc frigate.
In this regard, the French and Djiboutian ministers affirmed their desire to work together to prevent escalation in the Red Sea.
The French Minister also expressed her support for the mediation efforts undertaken by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), headed by Djibouti, in order to achieve a ceasefire in Sudan, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and resume the political transition process.
