UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin called for the return of young Russian national teams to international competitions.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin stated, in an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph, his desire for Russia’s young national teams to return to international tournaments and to remove them from the circle of sanctions and exclusion “so that hatred of the West is not instilled in Russian children,” as he put it.
The president of the European Football Association indicated that he would like to ease the restrictions so that children are not punished “for something that is not their fault,” but the suspension will not be lifted from national and adult teams until the end of the special Russian military operation in Ukraine.
Earlier, Karl-Erik Nilsson, First Vice President of UEFA, apologized for voting in favor of allowing Russian youth teams to compete.
It is noteworthy that the Executive Committee of the European Football Association allowed the Russian national teams of players under the age of 17 to participate in international tournaments in a neutral status, meaning participation without a flag and a national anthem and not on Russian territory.
