Chambers of Industry: Size of the Sector’s losses ranges between 15-20 Billion Dollars
Events – Rehab Abdullah
The former Secretary-General of the Union of Sudanese Chambers of Industry, Ashraf Salah Nour El-Din, has acknowledged that an accurate assessment of the damage that befell the industrial sector in Khartoum had not been conducted so far.
In an interview with Sudan Events , he attributed the matter to the continuation of the militia war and the inaccessibility of major industrial areas in Khartoum State, noting that Khartoum and Gezira states contain more than 90% of the industrial units and are until now areas of war, clashes and battles.
He pointed out that according to preliminary estimates, the percentage of complete destruction of industrial sector units exceeded 50%, varying between partial destruction and complete destruction, while vandalism and looting were likely to be 100%, in addition to the cessation of production for a period of more than a year and the directly resulting undesirable losses, adding that most factory owners are unable to know what happened to their factories until this moment, and the extent of the damage is unknown to them.
Salah revealed that some experts estimate the size of the industrial sector’s losses to range between 15 and 20 billion dollars, distributed between direct losses to the industrial units themselves, such as buildings, materials, raw machines, or ready-made manufactured materials, and the destruction of the basic infrastructure in the industrial areas, such as roads, electricity and sanitation equipment, water pipes and various environmental damages.
